Eligbility Information

Students are eligible to apply to the UNCG MARC U-STAR Trainee Program if they:

  • Attend UNCG full-time with a major related to the biomedical sciences (such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, Psychology, etc. )
  • Have at least two full years remaining at the university
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Plan to pursue a PH.D. in a biomedical science
  • Demonstrate an interest in the diversification of the biomedical research workforce
  • Are citizens, noncitizen nationals or permanent residents of the United States
  • Agree to fulfill all program requirements including a sustained research project with an approved mentor from UNCG or another approved local research facility throughout the academic year
  • Self-Identify as an underrepresented population
    • The NIH defines underrepresented as students who identify with one of the following:
       
      1. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders)
       
      2. Individuals with disabilities, who are defined as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities
       
      3. Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, defined as:
      ·         Individuals who come from a family with an annual income below established low-income thresholds.
       
      ·         Individuals who come from an educational environment such as that found in certain rural or inner-city environments that has demonstrably and directly inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to develop and participate in a research career.
